Compost Microorganisms
Type: Link
Description: In the process of composting, microorganisms break down organic matter and produce carbon dioxide, water, heat, and humus, the relatively stable organic end product. Under optimal conditions, composting proceeds through three phases: 1) the mesophilic, or moderate-temperature phase, 2) the thermophilic, or high-temperature phase, 3) a several-month cooling and maturation phase.

Animal Feeding Operations Air Agreement
Type: Link
Description: Washington, D.C. - Aug. 22, 2006 - Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has just gotten approval to take the next important step to gather air emissions data from agricultural animal feeding operations (AFOs) and to ensure compliance with environmental laws. This step consists of certain AFOs voluntarily taking part in a nationwide monitoring study to evaluate their air emissions.

Animal Feeding Operations (EPA-NPDES)
Type: Link
Description: The NPDES program regulates the discharge of pollutants from point sources to waters of the United States. Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) are point sources, as defined by the CWA [Section 502(14)]. To be considered a CAFO, a facility must first be defined as an Animal Feeding Operation (AFO).

About Animal Feeding Operations - EPA Agriculture
Type: Link
Description: Animal feeding operations (AFOs) are agricultural enterprises where animals are kept and raised in confined situations. AFOs congregate animals, feed, manure and urine, dead animals, and production operations on a small land area. Feed is brought to the animals rather than the animals grazing or otherwise seeking feed in pastures, fields, or on rangeland. There are approximately 450,000 AFOs in the United States.

The AgSTAR Program - EPA
Type: Link
Description: The AgSTAR Program is a voluntary effort jointly sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Department of Energy. The program encourages the use of methane recovery (biogas) technologies at the confined animal feeding operations that manage manure as liquids or slurries. These technologies reduce methane emissions while achieving other environmental benefits.

AFO/CAFO Nutrient Management Plan, NMP
Type: Link
Description: A Simple Nutrient Management Plan, NMP, This website is designed to provide a step-by-step process for developing a simple nutrient management plan. The material was developed to assist Montana's livestock producers in determining if they have enough land for manure application and developing their own nutrient management plan. Our intent was to provide information to help producers implement "best management practices" that are compliant, technically sound, economically feasible, and site-specific.

Removal of Phosphorus by Field Crops
Type: Link
Description: Phosphorus removal is a function of the harvested portion of a crop and the P content of the harvest. In this fact sheet we show how to estimate manure/fertilizer application limits if the P Index is high, based on projected P removal by the crop.
